Future Freedoms

The Fortune Society: Future Freedoms (November 14, 2024–March 24, 2025) marks our second exhibition at MoMA PS1. Featuring new works created while in residence at MoMA PS1, alongside artists Jenny Polak and Laura Cerón Melo as part of the Creatives Rebuild New York initiative, the exhibition includes self-portraits, (healing) garments, poetry, pennants, sculptures, audio recordings, a billboard, and a music video. The presentation in Homeroom is the culmination of a four-year collaboration between the two organizations. Reckoning with the aftermaths of incarceration, the exhibition imagines a more just future enacted through creativity.

We also created a broadsheet that serves as an educational resource as well as a souvenir of the exhibition.

Like the exhibition, this broadsheet was collaboratively envisioned and created by participants and staff from Fortune’s Creative Arts Program, along with Jenny and Laura. It sheds light on the many challenges faced during and after incarceration, while also offering context on the broader systems of surveillance, control, and punishment that keep individuals trapped in cycles of poverty and violence. Additionally, it serves as a mutual aid resource, providing advice from Fortune members to those navigating their return home from incarceration in NYC, while inviting non-impacted individuals to learn about and support initiatives, organizations, and movements that help system-impacted people lead dignified lives.

Finally, this work emphasizes the paramount role of compassionate support, nourishing community, and healing through the transformative power of art and self-expression in stabilizing people’s lives.
